Expert reports for the defence
Six expert reports framed the defence case. Each was served pursuant to the Order of Master Trench dated 15 December 1998 directing that each party may adduce expert evidence from historians and political scientists. Five address particular aspects of the historiography (shootings, gassing, systematic character, Hitler's role, right-wing networks); van Pelt's addresses the architecture of Auschwitz.
Evidence for the Implementation of the Final Solution
Christopher R. Browning
Documents the evidence for the shooting operations on Soviet territory after June 1941, the gassing operations at Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka, the Wannsee Conference and Operation Reinhard.
David Irving, Hitler and Holocaust Denial
Richard J. Evans
The principal report on Irving’s historiography. Examines Lipstadt’s allegations — that Irving is a discredited historian, a Holocaust denier, a manipulator of documents, and an apologist for Hitler — against Irving’s published books and speeches.
David Irving, Holocaust Denial, and his Connections to Right Wing Extremists and Neo-National Socialism (Neo-Nazism) in Germany
Hajo Funke
Addresses the defence allegation that Irving has allied himself with representatives of a variety of extremist and antisemitic groups and individuals. Maps Irving’s appearances at NPD, DVU and Association for Free Journalism events.
Hitler's Role in the Persecution of the Jews by the Nazi Regime: Electronic Version
Heinz Peter Longerich
First of two Longerich reports. Argues from the documentary record that Hitler was the moving force behind the persecution and ultimate murder of European Jewry — against Irving’s “no order” thesis.
The Systematic Character of the National Socialist Policy for the Extermination of the Jews
Heinz Peter Longerich
Second Longerich report. Argues that the policy was systematic, not the sum of local initiatives — against Irving’s claim that the killings on the Eastern Front were unauthorised excesses.
The Van Pelt Report
Robert Jan van Pelt
The defence’s architectural and forensic report on Auschwitz-Birkenau, central to the second half of the trial. Crematoria 2 and 3, the Leichenkeller, the roof apertures, the Vrba-Wetzler report, the chemistry of Zyklon B.
